The Wizard Of Oz Phoenix Theatre reviews
The Wizard of Ehh
While everyone knows the story of the Wizard of OZ through the film and the books, most have never seen a stage version. This was a fairly well produced version, although some of the director's choices were baffling and down right weird at times.
The multimedia effects were pretty amazing. It's about all you could do to simulate the pivotal moments in the show, i.e. the tornado. But what the multimedia effects triumphed with, the production seemed to skimp on rather mundane things, such as Munchkinland. Really? A 5th grade production cutout of multi colored buildings in the background was supposed to suffice for Munchkinland? Also, it was hard to put my head around regular sized munchkins. I know the reason for this, but still, munchkins are supposed to be, well, munchkins...not six foot tall ballet dancers.
I also didn't get the Blackbirds or the Talking Trees. The blackbirds especially. They were just plain weird.
All in all, the show featured good performances, the orchestra was great and most of the special effects were quite nice.
I had a good time, but the show was too "Children's Theatre" for me. Was the least favorite pick of the Broadway Show season in Montgomery.
